MISSION & SERVICE
Mission and Service are meant to engage people who are not part of our church. Here at Manistee UMC we believe that real ministry, mission, and service happens best when we partner with others in the community. Currently, we participate with LOVE INC, Salvation Army, Feeding America, Safe Harbor, and Habitat For Humanity to do what we can to bless the community of Manistee.
Here are a few things we have launched in the last year:
RIVER CITY MUSIC SCHOOL is a project we launched this last September. It was created for the sake of creating community through music. Here you can learn piano, drums, guitar, and song writing. Lessons are offered for individuals and groups.
MANISTEE BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK
We have partnered with several area churches to provide backpacks filled with food for homeless children that are given out on Fridays through the local schools. Food is provided by Meijer and Feeding America at very nominal costs. Backpacks are packed each week. The cost to sponsor a child throughout the school year is $100.
SALVATION ARMY FOOD PANTRY
This year we contacted the Salvation Army and worked with Olson Food Stores and Family Fare to push shopping carts through the local Fourth of July parade collecting canned goods for the local food pantry. In addition we carried the famous red buckets and rang the bells for the Salvation Army. We will be doing this each year. What a blast!
Each year we take a day when the beaches are busy and give away kites. What other church would literally encourage you to go fly a kite? What a cool way to may a child smile.
Here at Manistee UMC we look for ways to serve others and partner with them in mission and ministry. We participate in Community Table which serves meals to anyone who would attend. Many who attend also help with the meals.
We support and provide space for our local chapter of RICC (Regional Inclusive Community Coalition) which is a grass roots group of people with a variety of disabilities that are working together and with other community people to see people taking control of their own lives and live as responsible citizens. In addition we have a wonderful music ministry called Special Arts Chorus that fills the church with joyful noise! This group loves to sing and is guaranteed to bring a smile.
